Reading – Requirement 1

Requirement 1: Discuss with your counselor what citizenship in the community means and what it takes to be a good citizen in your community. Discuss the rights, duties, and obligations of citizenship, and explain how you can demonstrate good citizenship in your community, Scouting unit, place of worship, or school.

Discussion:

The Citizenship in the Community merit badge is about local and state government. (The Citizenship in the Nation merit badge is about the national, i.e., federal, government.)

In Vermont, the most important local government is town or city government. County government is important in other states, but not so much in New England.

Citizenship in the community means understanding your community and participating in its activities. It means learning about your community including its history – how it got to be the way it is today. It means learning about the laws and customs of your community. It means being respectful of other people in your community.

Duties and obligations of citizenship include: obeying the laws and paying taxes.
